Rabbi Yaakov Yehoshua Falk [1681-1756] was rabbi of Lvov, Berlin, and Frankfurt. He authored the series Pnei Yehoshua on the Babylonian Talmud. The Chid”a writes about him that he merited to see him and his face is like and angel of G-d. The “Pnei Yehoshua” maintains an honorable position in Chassidic history. According to Chassidic tradition, when the Ba’al Shem Tov was informed from Heaven that he was to serve as a scholar, he went to the author of Pnei Yehoshua , who he held to be the rabbinic leader of the generation, and he served him by giving him an ember from the stove by which to light his pipe. They took this opportunity to discuss the Chassidic movement. The Pnei Yehoshua was also the rabbi for the revealed (Torah) for the Maggid of Mezeritch, the primary disciple of the Besh”t.
