A protocol from the Mantua congregation regarding donations for the emissary of Tiberias, Rabbi Moshe ben Yaakov Majar, Mantua, [1798].
2 scrolls [4 leaves]. 32×21, 23×20 cm. The protocol was written in Italian, and in it the emissary is promised that they will hold a fundraiser for him in the Sephardi synagogue. He will deliver the sermon on the Shabbat of Chayei Sarah and immediately after his sermon the gabbaim will recite a Mi Sheberach prayer and go one by one to the attendees of the synagogue with no exceptions.
The emissary signed his name in Hebrew: “The young one Moshe son of Yaakov Majar, the young one who is sent from the holy city of Tiberias.”
Rabbi Moshe Majar traveled on this mission for 6 years. In 1800 he was in Hamburg, and when he finished his mission in Europe, he traveled to North Africa. From there he returned to Livorno, where he published his collection of responsa under the name Bnei Menashe. He dedicated the book to his son who died in an pestilence.
Enclosed is another document in Italian, on which are names of the donors and the amount of their promised donations.
