Handwritten compilation of leaves – last will and testament of the gaon Rabbi David Hesse, mo”tz of Tiel, Holland. The document is entitled ” Tazava’ah ” and the complete text of the will follows in beautiful and orderly script with his full signature. Over the next eighteen years, until his passing, the gaon Rabbi David added another five passages, with a date and full signature in the margins alongside each passage. Tiel (Holland), 1860-1878. Yiddish with some Hebrew.
The will was written, as stated, over the course of 18 years, beginning in 1860, when the first and principle part was written. Over the following years, Rabbi David added several signed supplements, according to what came up over the years. From the dates at the beginning of the will and at the end of the first part, it works out that this part was written over the period of a month. After it are five signed additions from 1868, 1869, 1871 and 1874 and the final one, labelled “supplement after supplement, ” was written on 26 Nissan 1878, about a month before his passing on 20 Iyyar, 1878.
The first, principle part of the will consists of seven sections. It opens with: “Last will and testament – written by me myself on Wednesday, the eve of Rosh Chodesh Adar, [1860], may the Blessed Hashem grant me … long life … but a person does not know when his time will come …” Written at the end of the first part: “Thursday of Parashat Vayikra, Yom Kippur Kattan of Rosh Chodesh Nissan, when at precisely this hour I would be occupied with Sefer HaZohar HaKadosh on Parashat Vayikra on the verse “if not for my covenant” … to arrange and detail ‘פסחו’ ל’י’ ש’ע’ר’י’ [=תר”כ] צדק אבוא בם אודה יה, completed in Tiel, the small one, David son of … Rabbi Avraham Hesse ztz”l.”
