Printed receipt with a blank space for a name. Begins שמרו משפט ועשו צדקה. Concludes: שנת תר”כ לפ”ק פעה”ק ירושלים. 1860.
[1] leaf. 10.5×16.5 cm.
Sh. Halevi does not list any prints from 1860. She therefore concludes in her preface [p. 25] that R’ Yisrael Beck’s press ceased its operation until 1861. During this year, he went to Istanbul in wake of the government’s prohibition against printing. He returned in 1861 and printed 3 books that year (Sh. Halevi 58-60). However, this receipt reveals that there was an active press in Jerusalem in 1860, and there was no other active press in the city at the time. The Bri”l-Solomon Press began operating in 1862. [The placement of the quotation marks in the date תר”כ indicates that there was no intention of adding another letter to change the date to a later year.]
