One side of the leaf features a detailed chart with dozens of names along with the amount of money they should receive and the amount that they actually received, and more. The second side of the leaf features a tally of the funds and a declaration by the trustees regarding its distribution, with the signatures of the trustees, headed by that of Rabbi Shmuel Salant.
Background: Rabbi Shmuel Salant [1816-1909] was known as a child prodigy when he was living in Kaiden. He studied at the Volozhin Yeshiva and received rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Avraham Abba Pasvaller and Rabbi Yaakov Bruchin, rabbi of Karlin. When he moved to Jerusalem in 1841, he served as Av Beit Din of the city’s Ashkenazim. He succeeded his father-in-law, Rabbi Zundel Salant, as rabbi of Jerusalem and was renowned as an outstanding leader and expert adjudicator who served the community for almost fifty years until his passing.
