Leaf containing “Seder Hafrashat Terumot V’Ma’asrot.” Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook’s personal stamp during his tenure as chief rabbi of Israel is impressed in the leaf. Lowey Press, early 20th century.
Before us is a historic leaf, with which the first chief rabbi of the Land of Israel would separate the Holy Land’s terumot and ma’asrot (tithes), after 2000 years of exile during which the vast majority of the Jewish people could not fulfill Land-of-Israel-dependent mitzvahs.
Instruction at the top of the leaf: “The geonim of the Holy Land … in the previous generation required that all that is sold to others must be tithed in its entirety … this regulation also includes Torah scholars.”
[1] printed leaf of paper, 25 cm. Fine condition.
