Sefer HaTishbi, word-roots [according to the numerical value of תשב”י] in Hebrew by the grammarian Rabbi Eliyahu HaLevi Ashkenazi (Rabbi Eliyahu Bachur). Grodno, 1805. Rabbi Eliyahu HaLevi Ashkenazi [1468-1549], was a rabbi and grammarian among the leading sages of Italy, marvelous in grammar and masoret, Bomberg press proofreader, rabbi in Padua and in Rome. There was a dispute between him and several rabbis who opposed his teaching Hebrew to gentiles (claiming that the gentiles used their knowledge of Hebrew to attack the Talmud; he responded that whoever studied with him was a good person who benefited the Jews, and he only taught them the Hebrew language and not Torah secrets.) His grandchildren include the apostate Shlomo Marano and his brother Vittori Uliani Morano – who caused the burning of the books of Talmud.
