Sefer Nahar Pishon – elucidation of biblical events and Talmudic sayings by Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav II, ‘The last of the Castile scholars,’ one of the Spanish exiles. Handwritten signature on the title page: “The youth, Gavriel Dessauer.” Lengthy glosses in his handwriting dealing with aggadah and kabbalah appear on a number of the book’s leaves [approximately 4]. Rabbi Gavriel Dessauer [1805-1878] was a disciple of the Chatam Sofer. He served as rabbi of Aletan-Pekaiar for close to 40 years. In his approbation for his disciple’s book, the Chatam Sofer grants him exalted titles (and he has risen above his colleagues … he hid studying Torah with diligence and worshiping in secret, he is pure delight … sweeter than honey). He authored many works, including: Yad Gavriel al Shulchan Aruch, Kasat Gavriel al Sefer Iyov, and Sefer HaAriel al Aggadot HaShas with a special section on “Aggadot Rabbah bar Bar Channah,” including a lengthy approbation by his teacher, the author of Chatam Sofer. It is known that he dealt with aggadahs, but the glosses before us demonstrate his expertise in kabbalah as well. For information about him, refer to MA”Z Kinstlicher, HeChatam Sofer V’Talmidav 95-96. More material included with this lot. 40 leaves, 22 cm. Fine condition. Aging stains. Simple binding.
