Sha’arei Dura, Dinei Issur V’Heter . Fundamental halachic work which merited many commentaries, some of them written by respected adjudicators such as the author of Trumat Deshen , the Maharsha”l and Rabbi Mordechai Jaffe – whose commentary appeared for the first time in the edition before us. The book quickly spread among the Jews of Ashkenaz, and became the authorized book for instruction in issur v’heter for generations, until the appearance of Shulchan Aruch. It is frequently quoted by books written in subsequent generations, such as the writings of the Mahari”l, the Beit Yosef and the Ram”a’s commentary on Shulchan Aruch. The Ram”a called him “Our Issur V’Heter ” that is, “our” central book for studying the laws of issur v’heter. The Ram”a even edited his book Torat Chatat according to the format of the Sha’arei Dura and parallel to the order of its simanim. Evidence of its large following is the large number of manuscripts that remained of it hundreds of years after the invention of the printing press.
