Original photograph ascribed to the rabbi of the entire Jewish people, Rabbeinu Yisrael Meir Cohen of Radin. Eastern Europe, early 20th century. This photograph was revealed for the first time about a year and half ago, in a booklet that dealt with the Chafetz Chaim’s attempt to ascend to the land of Israel. Like the well-known film clip showing the Chafetz Chaim arriving at Agudat Yisrael’s Knessiah Gedolah, this photograph was also discovered over ninety years after the Chafetz Chaim’s passing, and resulted in tremendous excitement. Photographs of the Chafetz Chaim are few and rare, because he refused to be photographed. Even the familiar photographs are deliberated for decades regarding whether they are original, authentic photographs, and they are exquisitely scrutinized. As such, each photograph that has the possibility of being a picture of the Chafetz Chaim draws tremendous interest. If another reliable source determines this to be an authentic photograph of the Chafetz Chaim, its value will be immeasurable! It is not every day that there is an opportunity to acquire a unique photograph of the gadol hador who was respected by all major rabbinic leaders, and whose photographs are so few. As stated, this photograph is ascribed to the Chafetz Chaim, and it is being sold as is. [1] photograph, 12×9 cm. Very fine condition. Tiny blemishes in the margins of the photograph.
