Voucher to receive bread from the head of the ghetto in Reichsgau Wartheland, known as the Lodz Ghetto. The voucher is in the name of Wolf Rozensztajn. Lodz Ghetto 1942.
Specifications: [1] color paper leaf. 14×16 cm.
Background: In contrast to other ghettos where food distribution and other basic necessities were based on smuggling from outside the ghetto area, in Lodz this was almost entirely impossible due to the strict meticulouness of the German authorities. The Jews were completely dependent on the German authorities and the Judenrat in terms of anything that concerned food and other necessary supplies. As such, starvation and disease were rampant in the ghetto. Approximately 164,000 people were forced to live in a four square kilometer area, of which only 2.4 km were fit for residence. In 1944, the ghetto was liquidated by Nazi forces. The year in which the details on the card were filled out (1942) was considered one of the most difficult periods in the history of the Lodz ghetto, as it was the year the Nazi authorities became even more stringent in limiting food supply to the non-working population.
Condition: Fine-very fine.
