Tractate Berachot with Rash”i, Tosafot, Piskei Tosafot, Rabbeinu Asher and the Rambam’s Peirush Mishnayot. Amsterdam, Immanuel Benveniste Press, 1644. Glosses and novellae handwritten by Rabbi Avraham Reggio.
Tractate from an early, important edition of the Talmud. Along the length of most of the tractate’s leaves, very lengthy novellae are inscribed, mainly on the aggadahs. The novellae are written in an organized manner marked with an asterisk at the beginning of the passage and with its opening words. Apparently the author prepared a complete work, as a preparation for print. The novellae were not examined.
There are two leaves at the end of the tractate with handwritten novellae, titled ‘פלפלת כל שהוא ממני הצ’ אברהם ריגייו’ [“Pilpellet Kol” from me, the youth Avraham Reggio]
Rabbi Avraham Chai Reggio [1755-1846] was a sage and kabbalist, rabbi of Gorizia in northern Italy, considered the most renowned rabbi in Italy of his time. He authored Tiglachat HaMaamar [Livorno, 1839] about shaving on the intermediate days of the festivals, opposing Maamar Hitgalchut written by his son[!] Yitzchak Shmuel Reggio (YaSha”R) who permitted shaving.
