With signatures on the title page: “Pinchas HaLevi Segal” as well as an inscription on the flyleaf attributed to the famous rabbi, Rabbi Pinchas HaLevi Segal … ???
One of the first seven books printed by Bek in the Land of Israel (in Safed). The book’s publishing was delayed at the press due to the rebels’ looting in Safed in 1834.
In his introduction, Rabbi Yisrael of Shklov details these events, and describes the rebels’ destruction of the printing press. By comparison of the letters: the first five leaves and leaf 94 onward were printed after the looting. The rest of the leaves were printed before the looting. In Av 1934, the Chatam Sofer already had a number of printed booklets.
With approbations by the rabbis of Jerusalem, Safed, Tiberias, Damascus and Baghdad. Approbation by Rabbi Moshe Sofer of Pressburg, Rabbi Avraham Abeli Fosswaller Av Beit Din of Vilna, and others. Rabbi Yisrael of Shklov’s historic introduction is at the beginning of the book with some lines about his rabbi, the GR”A, a description of the tragic story of the aliyah of the perushim to the Land of Israel after the GR”A’s passing, and the trials and suffering they endured in the Land. This introduction is the mainstay of the documentation of historic and scholarly research of the GR”A and of the aliyah of the perushim.
