The book was printed posthumously from the author’s manuscript by his son Rabbi Yisrael Landau, with an introduction by him.
Among the leaves of the book, there are approximately ten long glosses handwritten by Rabbi Yehudah Assad, some of them slightly cropped.
Rabbi Yehudah Assad – the Mahari”a Assad, was rabbi of Szerdahely and one of the leading rabbis of Hungary. He was born in 1797 in Assad, near Budapest. He studied at Rabbi Mordechai Bennet’s yeshivah and within a short period was appointed by him to deliver lessons. When the Chatam Sofer met him, he was greatly impressed by him and even acted on his behalf so that he would be accepted as a rabbi in Szerdahely. He established a yeshivah there with approximately 150 students. He was one of the leading rabbis and spiritual leaders of Hungarian Jewry and was also known for his struggle against the Reform. He passed away in 1866; he authored the Shu”t Yehudah Ya’aleh , Chiddushei Mahari”a and more.
Lengthy notation on the title page by Rabbi Yitzchak Tzvi Frei stating that he bought the book from the estate of his rabbi, the Mahari”a. Stamp of Rabbi Yitzchak’s son and additional notations about the book belonging to rabbi Yitzchak Frei. Rabbi Yitzchak Tzvi Frei [1847-1916], was born in Szerdahely and studied with the author of Ktav Sofer , who even selected him as a son-in-law. He also studied with Rabbi Yehudah Assad in Szerdahely.
