Colorful w oven silk bookmark with a picture of Miriam tracking Moshe Rabbeinu as a baby in the Nile. The verse “שאלו שלום ירושלים, ישליו אוהביך” and its translation into English: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, They shall prosper that love Thee” appear at the bottom. Made by Thomas Stevens of Coventry, England. The stamp on the back of the bookmark indicates that it was made on February 28th, 1874.
Thomas Stevens (1828-1888) was a famous weaver from Coventry. He invented the Stevengraph , a very popular method in the Victorian era which comprised preparing pictures from silk weaves. Coventry was bombed by the Germans during WWII, and most of Stevens’ original weaves were destroyed.
