The book was published for the first time from the manuscript which was hidden in the archives of the gaon, the Rishon LeTziyon Rabbi Yom Tov Elgazi, and brought to print by Chevron emissary Rabbi Yosef Eliyah HaLevi. Approbations by rabbinic leaders of Jerusalem: Mahari”t Elgazi, Rabbi David Pardo and others appear on the back of the title page. Handwritten signature of Rabbi Yitzchak Leib Sofer, son of the author of Ktav Sofer, on the title page: “הק’ יצחק ליב סופר בה”ג מהראשב”ס זצ”ל.” Handwritten signature and stamp of the Chatam Sofer’s associate, R’ Moshe Shacherles, on the title page and on leaf 18. Handwritten signature of “The youth Ya’akov David Dembnitz,” and on the title page, “Yeshayah Bennet Budapest.” Rabbi Yitzchak Leib Sofer [1848-1907] was born in Pressburg to his father Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, author of Ktav Sofer, who served as rabbi of the city and rosh yeshivah of the renowned yeshivah there. After his marriage, he assisted his father in the leadership of the yeshivah. He then moved to Drohobych where he served as president of Machzikei HaDat in Galicia. He authored the book Sofer Mahir and the compilation Shem MiShimon, a eulogy for his uncle, Rabbi Shimon Sofer. (Material about this is included with this lot.) Rabbi Moshe Shacherles was the renowned charity collector of Pressburg who assisted greatly after the fire of 1811. The Chatam Sofer wrote about him: “The general, the famous leader, our teacher Rabbi Moshe Shacherles, was always among our community leaders who maintained Hash-m’s Torah, his home was wide open, it is public knowledge, proof is unnecessary.
