Owner’s stamps of the Admo”r Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Rubin, son of the tzaddik, Admo”r and Av Beit Din of Solca, ztz”l, may his blood be avenged. There are approximately 15 handwritten scholarly glosses along the book’s leaves. A scholarly notation is penciled on the flyleaf.
Rabbi Gershon Stern of Ludash [1861-1936] is known by the moniker “Yalkut Gershuni” after his famous work before us. He is considered among the select disciples of the Mahara”m Schick. He was also a disciple of Rabbi Shmuel Ehrenfeld (the ‘Chata”n Sofer’) and of his future father-in-law, Rabbi Amram Blum (Av Beit Din of Beret-Aufallo, author of Shu”t Beit Shearim ). He was the rabbi in the town of Ludas (Luduş) and the nearby towns in the Maramureş
region, next to Klausenberg, Hungary (currently Romania). He served in this rabbinate for 51 years, until his passing. He founded a senior yeshivah in Ludash, were he taught hundreds of students. He stood at the head of his yeshivah for 29 years, until 1914, when his students were taken into forced labor for WWI, forcing him to shutter the yeshivah’s doors.
The Admo”r Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Rubin [1825-2013] was born to his father Rabbi Ya’akov Yisrael Vyshurun of Solca-Sorogen of the Ropshitz dynasty. After the Holocaust he moved to the United States and lived in Far Rockaway. He authored the book Minhagei Maharyy”v Solca and other works.
