Yerushat Pleitah – responsa by the great sages of Hungary, most of whom were killed in 1944, during the Holocaust … it began to be printed previously, and remained incomplete, and has now been published by ‘Chevrat Sha”s’ of Kehal Yerei’m of Pest. Budapest, 1946.
The book includes responsa to current and extremely interesting questions that were dealt with by Hungarian rabbis before the Holocaust. The responsa deal with questions that arose during that period, especially letters that were related to electricity: Electricity on Shabbat, telephone on Shabbat and Yom Tov, telephone for hearing megillah and prayers, stocks in Shabbat-desecrating companies; chametz on Passover and machine-made matzahs, flying in an airplane over cemeteries, genizah for mundane newspapers with some sacred texts, etc.
The last leaves bear the names of Hungarian rabbis who died in sanctification of G-d’s name in 1944. The list includes hundreds of names of rabbis and geonim of Hungary. One of the famous rabbis on the list of victims is the gaon Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund [with the misinformation that he was among the victims; his wife and children were indeed killed during the Holocaust]. Yet Rabbi Moshe Aryeh was not in fact killed during the Holocaust; he even ascended to the Land of Israel after the Holocaust, where he served in the highest position, as ga’ava”d of the Edah HaChareidit – and he lived to the age of 93!
Another tragic fact that should be mentioned here is that the responsum by the gaon Rabbi Yissachar Shlomo Teichenthal, author of the responsa Misheneh Sachir (pp 102-104) – who was killed in Auschwitz – was cut off in the middle.
