Background: Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Kook – one of the scholars of the city of Griva in the district of Dvinsk – was a tremendous Torah scholar full of Torah and fear of Heaven. His house in the city of Griva was full of Torah scholars and was a center of Torah study. He immigrated to Israel and lived in his son’s house in Jerusalem. Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook revered him and honored him greatly. There was always a chair waiting for him at the head of the table, and even during important meetings, when Rabbi Kook heard his father approaching the entrance to the room he stood up to his full height. He died on February 3, 1929, and in his eulogy on him Rabbi Kook especially praised his truthfulness [Refer to: Malachim Kivnei Adam pages 471-473].
In his letters, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook writes to him with great admiration, “My master, the father of my glory and the crown of my head, great in Torah, a treasure of pure fear [of Heaven] and every precious trait…my master and teacher the complete Rabbi Zalman Cohen”, (Shu”tDa’at Cohen 227), or “My master and father, the crown of my head, my heart and soul’s delight the Rabbi who is great in Torah and fear [of Heaven], a pleasant treasure full of advice” (Iggerot Ha’Raayah part one letter 4).
