Diskohrsh-Gahltan in di Kalleshia by Leib Hemmel fun Anshel Gumpel Ya’akov . Amsterdam, 1798. Yiddish.
In 1796, approximately a year after the French conquered Holland, a group of Jews from the old community in Amsterdam split off and established itself as the “Adath Jeshurun” community. The people of the new community were “open-minded” and advocated changes in various customs. Over several years, there was much tension between the old and the new communities, and polemic works were published by both groups.
This is a rare booklet written in a sharp and especially mocking style, in which the leaders of the old community are presented in various “regulations” as utter idiots who misappropriate public funds for their personal use.
