Printed leaf – prayer text composed by Rabbi Moshe Sofer, author of Chatam Sofer , to be recited during times of war. [Hungary], Av/August 1914.
At the top of the leaf: “Prayer for times of war … and in order to distribute them to everyone in the synagogue, it has been reprinted now, in 1914, in the month of Menachem Av.” That month (July/August) WWI broke out in full force, with new countries joining every few days.
The text of the blessing includes names of “our most great and pious king, minister of peace Kaiser Franz Joseph, ” alongside … Wilhelm II, Kaiser of Germany. Kaiser Franz Joseph, who was tolerant of Jews, died in 1917 during the war. Kaiser Wilhelm II resigned against his will at the end of the war.
