Unique Features: An official letter addressed to the Rabbinate of the city of Pest [which was not yet united with Budapest] establishing that there is no objection and nothing preventing a couple from marrying. At the end of the letter is his handwritten signature with the title Oberrabbiner, and his stamp. The certificate was signed in the last months of the Rabbi’s life, when he was already ill.
Content: The certificate deals with the marriage of Mr. Adolf Levi to the young girl Rosalia Kaufman from the Korumpa community in the Pressburg region, which is meant to take place on September 26 1871 in Pest. The marriage was declared three times in the synagogue here [Pressburg], as required by law and there are no objections, and in addition there are no legal causes preventing this marriage. Therefore, the aforementioned couple are referred to Rabbinate of Pest to be married.
Background: Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer [1815-1872], the firstborn son of the Chatam Sofer and his successor as Rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva of Pressburg immediately after his father’s death in 1839, despite his young age. Referred to by the name of his series of books as the author of the Ktav Sofer.
Condition: Fine-very fine. Folding marks, wear on the upper edge of the leaf with no damage to text.
