Detailed agreement regarding the bequest of Admor David Morgenstern of Kotzk. Handwritten, signed by his sons, the Admors Yaakov Yehoshua and Yisrael. Kotzk, 19 Sivan [1874].
[1] leaf, 20×27 cm.
Rabbi David of Kotzk, son of Rabbi Menachem Mendel, passed away in 1873. This is an agreement regarding his bequest. The agreement mentions Rabbi Zvi Morgenstern [Admor of Kotzk-Lomaz] and sisters Gittel and Glika. The detailed agreement was carefully constructed in order to be binding according to the Torah and the laws of the country.
The agreement was signed by Rabbi Yaakov Yehoshua and Rabbi Yisrael.
Rabbi Chaim Yisrael [signed Yisrael] was the noted Admor of Pilov and was renowned for his love of Jews. His brother, Rabbi Yaakov Yehoshua refused to serve as Admor and spent his time at his brother’s court. After his brother’s death in 1905, he started serving as Admor, when he was 73 years old. Most of his brother’s chassidim transferred their loyalty until his death three years later. Rabbi Yaakov Yehoshua was buried in Kotzk near his father, Rabbi David, and his grandfather. His letters and signatures are very rare.
The letter is from the collection of Admor Yechiel Meir of Kotzk – Lomaz. He was the son of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch of Lomaz, and lived in Praga, near Warsaw. His stamp appears on the back of the leaf: יחיאל מאיר בהרב הקדוש אדמו”ר שליט”א מפראגא.
Fold marks. Small tears in the margins, affecting solitary letters, professionally restored. Fine-very fine condition.
