Parochet for the Aron Kodesh. Gift of Michael Yehuda שאטטעלעס to the synagogue in the community of Yozefshtadt. [1881].Width 127 cm. Height 181 cm. Decorative embroidery in copper thread. Metal rings for hanging. Off-white cloth with embroidered flower patterns. A few tears in the front. Originally the curtain was 30 cm longer. However over the course of years this extra length was folded back. Hence this section with the writing and the decorations was preserved fully with its original beauty. As is well known, upon the destruction of Eastern Europe and the annihilation of the Jews, the Nazi’s ימ”ש made a museum and historical archive of the Jewish people, which they established in Marmarush, Romania. The Nazis transferred every beautiful and unusual article that they plundered in eastern Europe to this place. This curtain, which stood out in its undamaged state and beauty got to this museum as a result of these thieves. Inner lining of the curtain is stamped with three seals of the Nazi rule and their archives. (See photograph).
