Sefer Birkei Yosef on the four parts of Shulchan Aruch, by Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azoulay (the Chid”a). Vienna, 1859. Personal copy of the Admo”r of Yazov, Rabbi Ya’akov Landau, son of Rabbi Avraham of Chechnov and brother of Rabbi Ze’ev Wolf of Strikov.
The title page of the book bears several of the Admo”r of Yazov’s owner’s signatures: “יעקב בהגאון מוהר”א נ”י לנדא.” On the leaf preceding the title page, there is a notation regarding the above’s ownership of this book, and later on the leaf is a signature by his son, Rabbi Mordechai Yosef of Lodz. (It’s possible that Rabbi Ya’akov Landau himself also signed the leaf preceding the title page.) The Admo”r’s owner’s notation on the book along with his son Rabbi Mordechai Yosef’s signature also appear on the blank leaf at the end of the book.
The Admo”r Rabbi Ya’akov Landau [1834-1896] was a son of the gaon Rabbi Avraham of Chechnov, one of the select group of Chassidim in Kotzk and then a follower of the Chiddushei HaRi”m. He assisted his father in the Chechnov rabbinate, and after his father’s passing, he accepted the authority of his brother, Rabbi Ze’ev Wolf of Strikov. After his brother’s passing, he was one of his primary successors as Admo”r. He resided in Yazov, near Lodz, and is known by this location.
