“With blessings for Mazal Tov Mazal Tov , M. Schneerson” (The Rebbe’s double blessing)
Letter loaded with blessings for a young couple about to wed, with advice more precious than gold in the margins regarding matters of livelihood. 28 MarCheshvan 1958.
The Rebbe blesses the young couple with very important blessings. First, for the wedding itself: “May it be His will that it [the wedding] be at an auspicious and successful time in all its details.” He then blesses them for the rest of their lives: “And may they live long lives in goodness and pleasantness” which is an incomparably wondrous blessing, yet the Rebbe strengthens it even more: “And as my father-in-law would say … goodness in all its meanings”! The Rebbe concludes with a double Mazal Tov blessing that symbolizes endless blessing: “With blessings of Mazal Tov Mazal Tov, M. Schneerson.”
In the margins of the letter, the Rebbe adds advice more precious than gold regarding matters of livelihood. As can be understood from the Rebbe’s reply, one of the in-laws had a problem with a bad smell in his office, and he asked the Rebbe whether he should change offices. The Rebbe’s response teaches two basic concepts, one practical and the other a segulah. First the Rebbe writes that the location of the business is critical. Despite its being a reputable, profitable and long-term office, he is under no circumstances to move to a less prominent or central location than his previous location. The additional segulah matter that the Rebbe determines: Despite the problems, it is not worthwhile to leave a location that has seen long-term success.
