Lechem L’fi HaTaf – Hebrew textbook and Italian-Hebrew dictionary authored by Rabbi Aharon Luzzato, Trieste, 1853. Hundreds of glosses and comments are handwritten by the author along the book’s leaves.
Before us are hundreds of glosses and comments on almost every leaf in the book, most in Italian and a few in Hebrew, including comments that spread across entire pages. The author apparently planned to publish a second, revised edition of the book, based on the handwritten corrections in the copy before us, but in the end, a second edition was not printed. Nevertheless, these corrections may have been used in the printing of the Italian-Hebrew dictionary published by the author three years later (in Verona, 1856).
Rabbi Aharon Luzzato was among the Italian sages of the 19th century. He authored the book Sama DeChayyei in which he opposes doctors and remedies (Trieste, 1860). For example, he writes that doctors “don’t know anything, they are all doctors in vain, their wisdom is nothing, their understanding is zero.” He also authored the book Gal Avanim (Trieste, 1851) and the book Istabel HaChagav which is a criticism with controversial words opposing the book Sde Yitzchak by Rabbi Yitzchak Guata (Trieste, 1850).
