Breast plate for a Torah Scroll. Silver marked, “F”, France, 18th century. Small breast plate that marked the second Torah Scroll used on a Shabbat or holiday when two or three scrolls were utilized for the Torah readings. Width: 18 cm. Height: 11 cm. With chain: 49 cm. Written on the bottom of the plate: ספר שני in hammer work. The plate itself is made of cutout and repousse work characteristic of the place and time. Linked, silver chains attached with three rings to one side of the plate and with a butterfly-shaped decoration on the other. Another linked chain used for hanging the plate is attached to the butterfly. Very fine condition.
