Before us is the first part of the first edition of the novellae by the first Admor of the Gur dynasty. Words by the printer, Rabbi Pinchas Menachem, the Admo”r’s grandson, appear on the back of the title page. A handwritten signature and owner’s stamps by Rabbi Chaim Meshulam Kaufman HaKohen, Av Beit Din of Gostinin [Gostynin], are on the title page. Approximately 20 glosses handwritten by him appear among the book’s leaves. Rabbi Chaim Meshulam Kaufman, also known as Utterman [1861-1924], was among the famous rabbis of Poland, a disciple of the Admo”r Rabbi Meir Yechiel of Ostrovtza and of Rabbi Chaim Eliezer Wax of Petrikov, author of Nefesh Chayah. He served as rabbi in Ratziondzh and then in Gostinin, as well as in Pultosk. He established a yeshivah and led it. He is known for his work Petach HaOhel, and he also authored Eleh HaMitzvot, Nes LaShoshanim, Eleh HaEdot, and Eleh HaMishpatim. In his book Mikveh Taharah (Warsaw, 1914), there is a polemic about the suitability of a mikveh. It includes a lengthy responsum sent to him by Rabbi Yosef Rosen of Dvinsk [“The Rogachover”] in which he addresses him using exalted titles. 166 leaves. 33 cm. Fine condition.
