Collection of [16] illustrated leaves connected to Jews and Judaism, published in The Illustrated London News , all but one from the 19th century. Approximately 28×40 cm. The illustration from the 11.08.1926 issue is displayed on a double leaf sized 36×51 cm.
The topics presented in the illustrations before us are: Some pictures of Jewish synagogues in various European countries, a Jewish soup kitchen, Jews in Poland travelling by cart to the market, the Jewish market, Montefiore’s sukkah and Jewish community buildings including the monument over Montefiore’s wife’s grave, events celebrating Montefiore’s 100th birthday, a number of pictures of Jews praying in the synagogue in general and on Yom Kippur in particular, the Jewish sage in his home, Jews at the Western Wall, as well as illustrations of the Jewish court.
The Illustrated London News was the first illustrated newspaper in the world, published in London between 1842-2003. The newspaper presented articles on science, scientific and technological advances, art and culture, political events and the history of the royal family. It also published serial stories. Most of the articles were accompanied by illustrations, and later on by photographs.
Fine-very fine condition, some pages have blemishes or tears, without damage to text.
