A letter from Rabbi Yehudah Leib Konigsberg, av”d of Tsheinmanger, a disciple of the Chatam Sofer, to Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ullman, author of Yeriot Shlomo. The year “Shever” [1842]. At the bottom of the leaf are three lines in the handwriting of the Yeriot Shlomo.
[1] leaf. 15×24 cm. The letter is written on one side, on the other side is the address and the postal stamp of Vienna.
In the letter before us Rabbi Konigsberg expresses his sorrow that he can not come and meet Rabbi Ullman, due to his position in the rabbinate “and it is not lust for money which prevents me, rather that I have no-one else to take my place.”
Rabbi Yehudah Leib Konigsberger (1791-1861) studied under the Chatam Sofer and Rabbi Shalom Ullman, av”d of Lackenbach, the father of the Yeriot Shlomo. Rabbi Konigsberger was ordained by Rabbi Mordechai Benet and the Chatam Sofer. He served as av”d of Tsheinmanger from 1839.
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ullman was the author of the responsa Yeriot Shlomo and av”d of Mako from 1826 until his death in 1863.
