Copy with an especially distinguished pedigree!
Sefer Da’at Torah , Part III, on Shulchan Aruch Yorah Deah, by the gaon Rabbi Shalom Mordechai HaKohen Schwadron – the Maharsha”m of Brezhin, one of the leading geonim of the generation. Published from manuscript by his grandson, the Maggid HaYerushalmi, the gaon Rabbi Shalom Mordechai HaKohen Schwadron. Jerusalem, 1975. Copy that belonged to Rabban shel Yisrael , the gaon Rabbi Ya’akov Yisrael Kanievsky – the Steipler.
Beautiful and interesting dedication to the Steipler on the title page, handwritten by Rabbi Shalom Mordechai Schwadron (II): ‘Bs”d, Nissan 1975, For Mara”n, shlit”a . Please pray for me to live a long, full life, and that I merit to publish all the writings by my grandfather and father ztzuk”l. Signed, Shalom Mordechai HaKohen, son of Freida Leah zllh”h.’ Both of Rabbi Shalom Mordechai’s requests from the Steipler indeed materialized to some degree (he lived a long life compared to his contemporaries, and he published Shu”t Maharsha”m and Da’at Torah ).
This is apparently the first copy to come out of the printing press! Each page of this copy was printed on a separate leaf, and later pasted to the leaf next to it. Apparently the gaon Rabbi Shalom Schwadron wanted to give this one specifically – the first copy of the first edition – as a “first fruits” offering to the gadol hador .
Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the author, the gaon Rabbi Shalom Mordechai HaKohen Schwadron [I] , the dedicator, the gaon Rabbi Shalom Mordechai HaKohen Schwadron [II] and the owner, the gaon Rabbi Yisrael Ya’akov Kanievsky .
