A stormy controversy broke out in the middle of the 19th century after the community rabbi, Mayer Zipser, instituted reforms that were opposed by the more conservative members of the community. The Rabbi was forced to leave, and the trustees appointed Dr. Yosef Gugenheimer as the new Rabbi. This Rabbi, son-in-law of Rabbi Samson Refael Hirsch, reversed the regulations of his predecessor. The trustees complained to Rabbi Hirsch who supported his son-in-law’s position. Rabbi Hirsch’s lengthy, detailed answer is printed in this book. The book was not translated into Hebrew. Original, cardboard binding. Very fine condition. Very rare. Not in the National Library.
