The Jewish community in Shanghai was established in 1844 by Jewish merchants. During the Second World War tens of thousands of Jews who had escaped from conquered Europe joined the community. These included Rabbis and students of the Mir yeshivah. The last members of the community left the city in the years 1947-48 because of the civil war in China.
