Early (First?) evidence of sending an emissary of Jerusalem to the United States, and fundraising there. In fact, it can be argued that contrary to the popular claim today, that the first intervention of American Jews on behalf of the Jews in the Land of Israel was for the Damascus Affair in 1840, the newspaper before us indicates that as early as 1824, a Jerusalem emissary was sent to Charleston, the largest Jewish city in the Untied States at the time, to collect funds for the redemption of captives in Jerusalem.
Copy of Miles Weekly Register from May, 1824. Appearing on page 152:
FROM JERUSALEM, a rabbi of the Jews has recently arrived at Charleston, to claim the aid of the “seed of Abraham” in the United States, for the payment of certain severe requisitions imposed on their brethren resident at Jerusalem, by the Turks-who have taken possession of the persons of some of the most distinguished of their tribe, and hold them as hostages for the contributions demanded .
