The author [1777-1832] was a dayan of Izmir who established many regulations in that city. He studied Kabbalah with the author of Chikrei Lev . Rabbi Chaim Palagi, who knew him, extensively cites Rabbi David’s wondrous conduct in his books. He also authored the book Tehillah L’David (in two parts) as well as printing Rabbi Ezra Malki’s book of sermons.
The title page bears the owner’s signature of Rabbi David ben Shimon. Rabbi David ibn Shimon – known as Dva”sh, and also as Tzuf Dva”sh, was a great rabbi in Rabat, Morocco, and taught many disciples. In 1854, he ascended to the Land of Israel, and later established the Va’ad HaEidah HaMa’aravit there, as well as the Machaneh Yisrael neighborhood. He is known for his works Sha’arei Tzeddek , Sha’arei HaMatarah , and Sha’arei Mefaked . He passed away in 1840; his descendants are the extensive Ben Shimon family.
