Lengthy halachic response written by Rabbi Chaim Berlin, with an added response by Rabbi Moshe Nachum Yerushalamski. [1894].
[2] leaves. 22×35 cm. Halachic response regarding an agunah from Cheronbyl, whose case was discussed by Rabbi Mordechai Dov Hornsteipel [son-in-law of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz] and Rabbi Meir Halobstick, moreh tzedek in Chernobyl. The letter starts with a precise description of the situation, and Rabbi Chaim Berlin discusses the case at length in regards to practical halachah. His response is divided into ten clauses. At the conclusion, Rabbi Chaim Berlin states that he joins with the opinion of Rabbi Mordechai Dov Hornsteiple, to release the agunah, on condition that a third, prominent, rabbi joins them. After Rabbi Chaim’s signature, there is a response written and signed by Rabbi Moshe Nachum Yerushalamski, in which he also joins the “heter.”
This important response is printed in the works of both rabbis, in Nishmat Chaim and Be’er Moshe.
Rabbi Chaim Berlin (1832-1913) was the son of the Netziv, and was a prominent rabbi of his time. He was rabbi of Moscow and the Rosh Yeshiva of Volozhin for a short while. He later became rabbi of Kobrin until he immigrated to Jerusalem.
Rabbi Moshe Nachum Yerushalamski (1855-1916) became rabbi at a young age, in Kaminka, and was known as the rabbi of Kielce. He was an outstanding posek, and when he was only 17, already joined a “heter me’ah rabbanim.” He was close to the Divrei Chaim of Sanz and then Admor David of Tolna.
