“Don’t be concerned about bothering me, all [your] words are very sweet to me …” The ‘Chazon Ish,’ prime adjudicator of Land-of-Israel-dependent mitzvahs, responds in handwriting to practical-halachic inquiries on the laws of hybrids [כלאים], sent to him by his disciple and associate, Rabbi Kalman Kahane, rabbi of kibbutz Chafetz Chaim. Rabbi Kahane sent the Chazon Ish seven questions on the practical halachah of hybrids, and the Chazon Ish responds to them. The Chazon Ish marks his responsa by number. Responsum 1 is empty, followed by responsa to questions 2-7. With his nobility of spirit, the Chazon Ish added a note in the margin, in his poetic golden tongue, “All [your] words are very sweet to me, said with wisdom and knowledge which bring joy to the heart and light to the eyes.” Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz [1879-1953] is known by the name of his book, as the author of Chazon Ish. He was a gaon and a tzaddik, expert in all secrets of Torah, who reconstructed the Torah world after the Holocaust. He was one of the leaders of the Chareidi public in the Land of Israel, among those who charted its path in the period following the establishment of the state. He revived the issue of shemittah and was especially active in instilling a broad awareness of observance of Land-of-Israel-dependent mitzvahs, especially in the New Yishuv. He invested a lot of his time and energy teaching the practical halachahs of these mitzvahs. He demanded that the Poalei Agudat Yisrael kibbutzim observe shemittah without relying on “heter mechirah” to a gentile by the chief rabbinate, which he rejected. These activities were carried out by his close associate, Rabbi Kalman Kahane, writer of this letter. [2] pages, 25×20 cm. Handwritten by the Chazon Ish, with a sketch on the laws of hybrids, also by him. Fine condition. Blemish in the bottom margin.
