Content: Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach does not repeat the question in his responsum. However, his reply indicates that he was asked about a specific electronic device. In his answer, he states that he does not want to give a definitive reply, since he does not know the nature of the device. However, he suggests that the questioner not rely on those who are lenient, allowing the use of the device, “until there will be an accepted psak permitting its use from leading Torah luminaries.”
Background: Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (1910-1995) was a leading posek and the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Kol Torah for 46 years. Though he was a chareidi rabbi, he was accepted by all factions of religious Jewry. He was famed for the pleasant way he greeted all visitors. He never served in the rabbanite, though he was offered many positions, such as rabbi of Jerusalem. He spent much time researching and answering questions related to technology and medicine and was considered the final authority on these subjects. He wrote his first work, Meorei Esh, at the age of twenty-five, and it was dedicated to technology- electricity on Shabbat.
