Sacred letter entirely handwritten and signed by the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, av beit din of Derecske, author of Divrei Sofrim son of Rabbi Zussman Sofer of Paks, the most prominent dynasty in Hungary after that of the Chatam Sofer. Paks, 1937.
This letter was sent by Rabbi Shmuel Binyamin to the United States, to Dr. Eliyahu Jung, one of the most prominent American rabbis. In his letter, the av beit din of Derecske thanks Rabbi Jung for his assistance and support, for sending him $20 “to save us in our financial distress, to have mercy on us” and he requests continued support in the future. The poverty in which giants of the previous generations lived is inconceivable to us – when had to rely on charity from overseas.
After the signature, on a separate page, the av beit din of Derecske continues, writing an additional letter on the same topic to Rabbi Avraham Tzvi Friedman, signing at the end “הנ”ל” [as above]. The av beit din of Derecske blesses Rabbi Jung at the end of the letter with wealth “May [you] be blessed with the triple blessing of health, offspring and livelihood, and all goodness, selah.”
