Arnoux was active from 1860-1890. He was among the first photographers to arrive in Egypt to photo-document the development of the Suez Canal. He was one of a group of French photographers – Gustave Le Grey, Henri and Emile Bechard, Felix Bonfils,and the Greek Zangaki brothers who worked in the Nile Valley. Arnoux was the official photographer appointed by Universal Company to photograph the digging of the Suez Canal. At the same time, he opened a studio in which he photographed Egyptian and Oriental figures in characteristic dress, such as this picture.
