Lengthy and important historic-Torani letter [3 pages], from the gaon Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Shpitzer, av beit din of Mishkoltz and Hamburg, to the gaon Rabbi Elchanan Gumpertz, ra’ava”d of the community in Hamburg. Mishkoltz, 1910.
The letter discusses the appointment of the gaon Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Shpitzer as av beit din of Hamburg – the second-largest city in Germany [after Berlin]. According to the date line and the signature, the letter was sent while Rabbi Shpitzer was still serving as av beit din of Mishkoltz, yet after the decision to appoint him as av beit din of Hamburg. In his letter, Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin expresses his appreciation to Rabbi Elchanan for being the decisive factor in his acceptance to the position in the Hamburg rabbinate. The second [and primary] part of the letter is a Torah discussion regarding the mitzvah of tefillin.
