Halachic responsum by the “Posek HaDor” Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Wosner, with a conditional text composed by Rabbi Wosner to avoid uncertainties with respect to the sanctity of the synagogue and the study hall. To the best of our knowledge, this responsum was not printed in Shu”t Shevet HaLevi. “When I came home a week ago, I found my beloved, the text of a conditional Torah building …” Thus Rabbi Wosner opens his interesting and important halachic letter. The halachic responsum discusses a current issue, about a home which is partially designated for prayer, and whether the laws of a synagogue apply to it, with all that this would imply. Rabbi Wosner composes a special conditional text in the halachic responsum before us, which is effective according to all opinions, in order to avoid all uncertainty. Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Wosner [1913-2015] was born in Vienna, and was the primary disciple of Rabbi Meir Shapira at the Chachmei Lublin yeshivah. Rabbi Wosner ascended to the Land of Israel in 1939 and quickly became famous as one of its prominent Torah scholars. He was appointed rabbi and Av Beit Din of the Zichron Meir neighborhood of Bnei Brak following the Chazon Ish’s initiative, a position he held for the rest of his life. In addition, Rabbi Wosner served as the rosh yeshivah of Chachmei Lublin. Rabbi Wosner is considered one of the leading adjudicators of the last generation, and his halachic authority was accepted in all circles, to the point that he earned the nickname “Posek HaDor.” He had many Chassidic followers and he was known as a wonder- and salvation-worker with the prowess of his Torah.
