Lengthy and important halachic letter (actually a pair of letters, one on each side of the leaf), with respect to the controversy about the eruv in Odessa, Ukraine, from Rabbi Yosef Yisrael Halperin, av beit din of Odessa and other Odessa rabbis, to Rabbi Chaim Berlin. Odessa, 1901.
In the letter, the rabbis of Odessa explain why carrying on Shabbat should be prohibited in Odessa, and why an eruv cannot be built there. In the letter, the city’s rabbis request that Rabbi Chaim Berlin support their position and express his opinion that it be prohibited.
Aside from the av beit din Rabbi Yosef Yisrael Halperin, another two of Odessa’s rabbis sign in the margins: Rabbi Shmuel Flinkovsky and Rabbi Ya’akov Rabinowitz.
On the second side of the letter, there is another letter regarding the eruv handwritten and signed by Rabbi David Shlomo Slushatz – author of the books Reishit David and Tiferet Yehudah .
