Very interesting letter handwritten and signed by “Maharit”z Dushinksy,” Av Beit Din of the Eidah HaChareidit, sent to the rabbis of Tel Aviv.
Specifications: [1] letterhead, 15×21 cm. Autograph, signed, and dated the 28th of Tishrei, 1939. Discusses the kashrut status of a factory. Stamped “received” on the 1st of Cheshvan, 1939.
Unique features: In 1939 (the date of this letter), the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv was Rabbi Amiel, a leader of the “Mizrachi” movement. This correspondence and the cooperation on kashrut affairs between the Av Beit Din of the Eidah HaCharedit and a leader of the Mizrachi is very interesting in light of their zealous political opposition.
Background: Rabbi Yosef Zvi Dushinsky (1867-1948) known by the appellation “HaMaharitz Dushinsky,” was known to be a Torah genius and righteous person. He was a disciple of the Shevet Sofer of Pressburg, rabbi of Galante and Chust, and prominent Hungarian Rosh Yeshiva. In 1933, he was invited to serve as Av Beit Din of the Eidah Hacharedit and Rabbi and Av Beit Din of the Ashkenazic communities in the Holy Land, to replace Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. He established his glorious Yeshivat Beit Yosef Zvi in Jerusalem.
