Response to a halachic inquiry handwritten and signed by the Rishon LeTziyon Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef. Jerusalem, 1964.
Rabbi Ovadiah does not address the actual content of the question in his letter; he writes to the sender that he is very involved in the preparation of a book for the benefit of the public, and does not have the time to respond. He indicates that when he is available, he will respond to the question. He directs the questioner to other rabbis, as there are many. Rabbi Ovadiah concludes his letter with an interesting blessing: May his honor grow in Torah and may people turn to him for questions and answers, please understand me and judge me favorably.
Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef [1920-2013] was the chief rabbi of Israel – the “Rishon LeTziyon, ” spiritual leader and president of the Shas party’s council of Torah Sages, senior Sephardic rabbi of his generation, and was known as “Posek HaDor.” His period was the golden age of Sephardic Jewry in the Land of Israel. Approximately half a million people participated in his funeral, which was the largest in the history of the State of Israel.
