* Kuntress Halachah LeMa’asah “on the law of Shemittah produce grown in transgression, as to whether it is permissible. Group of letters sent by the rabbi … Ya’akov David Ridba”z shlit”a [from Safed] to the sages of Jerusalem.” Jerusalem, 1910. Rare only edition.
This group of letters was written following an assembly that took place at the Rishon LeTziyon winery led by Boris Shatz, founder of Bezalel, together with his friend Mordechai ben Hillel HaKohen, and others. At this assembly, they mocked and ridiculed the prohibition of working fields during the shemittah year. The Ridba”z, one of the rabbinic leaders of the generation, relates the truth of the matter in his letters, and he adds a request that each person who gave him at least one penny publicize this in the press. He goes on to speak about the “shnur gesheft” of Boris Shatz, Bezalel and their associates. Most of the letters deal with Talmudic topics and halachahs that relate to the prohibition of eating Shemittah produce that was grown in sin in the Land of Israel. Yet the introduction deals entirely with Boris Shatz and his associates. There are also halachic rulings from batei din in the Land of Israel.
