A general kvittel – “Kollelot Kvittel”, sent by the congregation of Karlin chassidim in Safed, to their Rabbi, the Rebbe Rabbi Avraham Elimelech of Karlin (1891-1942), one of the greatest Rebbes of his time.
Specifications: [1] paper leaf with large squares. 23×28 cm. Ink in scribal handwriting. Some in large block letters which were colored in gold.
Unique Features: In the Karlin chassidut, more than in other chassic groups, there was complete self-nullification before the Rebbe, but the Rebbe related to the chassidim in Israel with extra respect, and even asked them to pray for him at the holy sites, as can be seen from what they write: “We are his servants…for praying at all of the holy sites for the entire house of the holy court…”
Content: The kvittel was written in 1926 (when the Rebbe was 35 years old), and is replete with terms of great respect “With bowing and prostrating ourselves…before the great genius our father who has mercy on us the holy Rebbe” and they sign: “With the pleading of his servants who beg with feelings of holiness and prostrate themselves from afar with extremely exalted awe”.
Twenty one chassidim signed the kvittel with their name and their mother’s name, some of them also wrote their surname, and some described their request such as: “Complete recovery in body and mind”, “And to repay the debts easily”.
