Letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Elazar Menachem Mann Shach, rosh yeshivah of Ponovezh.
“This constitutes strengthening Torah and fear of Hash-m here in our Land” – from the words of Rabbi Shach in his request from the rabbi appointed to oversee charity funds, to transfer donations to an organization disseminating Torah. Rabbi Shach, with his merciful heart and great responsibility for all matters regarding Judaism, whoever and wherever they are, begs and implores on behalf of the organization, as if it was his own private organization, and even more so.
Rabbi Elazar Menachem Mann Shachֲ [1898-2002] carried over the yeshivah tradition from the Lithuanian greats before the Holocaust to the yeshivah world in the Land of Israel. He was the rosh yeshivah of Ponovezh and president of Agudat Yisrael’s Council of Torah Sages, and then of Degel HaTorah. He was one of the greatest leaders of the Jewish people. Beginning in the 1970s, Rabbi Shach led the Lithuanian (“yeshivish”) Chareidi public, who saw him as the Gadol HaDor – the rabbinic leader of the generation. He authored the book series Avi Ezri.
