Letter on the stationery of the Adat HaMaravim [the Maghrebi – Moroccan Jews] dated: 8th of Kislev, 1924, regarding abstention from participation in the Vaad HaLeumi meeting about women’s rights. Clear scribal writing [Rashi script] and the signatures of the leading Maghrebi rabbis.
“We received the letters … inviting us to participate in the meeting of the election committee for the city council of the Jews of Jerusalem to discuss elections … unfortunately, we cannot accede to their requests to send representatives to be present at the meeting and to give their opinion regarding women’s rights since our rabbis and sages have already decreed that this is against our holy Torah … and in the holy city, most of the people and sages have signed with the charedim against the women’s right …”
The margins of the letter bear signatures of the leading rabbis of the Maghrebi community. Signature of Rabbi Eliyahu Yaakov Algiemi, Rabbi Shimon Ashriki, and Rabbi Shmuel Elaluf, and three stamps: one from the Beit Din Tzedek K”K HaMaarvim, one the committee stamp and the third from the Kollelot Adat HaMaarvim.
